To the Shakespeare Dramatists...

Dear Shakespeare Dramatists,

Today and tomorrow, you will battle it out at the much awaited finals of the competition.

As of now, you are no longer young actors/ actresses from schools, striving to prove a point and justify your position in a competition. You are citizens of Rome, Venice, Padua, Illyria, Vienna (depending on your play) Whether you speak or not; whether your audience learns your story today or not, all of you have your story to tell- thirty minutes in which to be watched as you live a small part of your life. Live your character. Connect with the people around you. Connect to the people watching and listening as you tell your story. We will pay attention. Make sure you do yourselves proud in order that although this is- after months of rehearsing- the final time you will get to perform your particular drama, we will all remember how you represented an authentic slice of life on the stage.

Break a leg; may the best team(s) win.

  4. Good show! I loved the performance of Coriolanus, too bad the judges don't appear to have very good taste:P

Jokes aside though, I was not the only one in the audience who felt that you guys should have won. The only fair decision that took place was the award to your Coriolanus- SPECTACULAR performance.

  5. The sad part is this keeps happening to us.... Disappointing not to win, but nice to hear there were people in the audience who loved our performance....:)

  6. There were plenty of those, Iqraas. :)

You should all feel proud that regardless of the result, you know that the performance was next to flawless, and that everyone recognized the fact and will remember D.S' take on Coriolanus.

  9. thank you :)....I hope at least from next year on wards we have a set of qualified judges for the finals rather than a set of puppets who have nothing much to do with drama.....It's a real shame for such a prestigious competition when the results are of disappointing nature....I hope someone writes to the ymca on this.....

  11. You're right, Iqraas- maybe as I've said in my other rants, the schools should get together and do this so we don't have a repeat performance of this fiasco next year?

    1234- egad. Can't believe I missed that :S I'm reading Coriolanus again.

  12. i kid u not don't be surprised if we see the same thing happening next year as well...it's just a shame...isn't it??this just keeps happening....one someone else should do the organizing bit next year or they should bring in some foreign neutral judges....only way i see this competition going foreword..

  13. Well, Mr. Richard Danziger is foreign :)the point is that foreign or not the judging panel selected must comprise of people who are:

    a. Familiar with Shakespeare
    b. Have been involved with the dramatization of Shakespeare plays
    c. Are currently or have RECENTLY been involved in the above
    d. Capable of providing adequate justification of their decisions along with proof that they have worked in accordance with a pre-defined, pre-approved (by the organizers and participants alike) criteria.

I have said this before- this is a big competition, firmly established as THE Shakespeare Drama Competition in the country. But what would happen if, in the cause of ensuring justice and quality judging, a large group of active participants sheds their over competitive notions and carry out a united boycott of the competition until such time as certain issues are ironed out? Needless to say the organizers would be in a shitting funk :)

  14. well....there is a school of thought that christian schools get the nod over other schools more often that not....we saw what happened to ds...they simply lost because they didn't have a saint in front!how stupid it was to award petruchio best supporting....ridiculous...and did st. Benedict's even deserve to be in the finals???they were no match to ds or thora for that matter...i thought royal were unlucky to miss out....im afraid this competition as the leading drama competition in the island is going out of favor among schools due to some poor and silly judging errors made by a few puppets who know a bit of English, but im afraid not Shakespeare Drama...

  15. Hey Ikki,

I've heard this said, but not having been here in previous years, I can't comment on that one. How disappointing it would be if that were true.

Sorry for my absurd delay in replying, by the way! :S
